Robert brings more than 20 years of education, social marketing and media relations experience to Backstage Marketing. Before co-founding the firm, he served as vice president and general manager of Vollmer Public Relations, public relations director at Sherry Matthews Advocacy Marketing in Austin, account director at Phase Two Strategies in San Francisco and public relations director at the Texas Federation of Teachers. Many of the campaigns he’s worked on--such as College for Texans and Drive Clean Across Texas--were the nation’s first statewide programs of their kind.

Robert’s skill in marketing, media placement, spokesperson training and crisis management have enabled him to generate millions of dollars in results through such venues as “Oprah,” NBC’s “Nightly News,” NPR’s “All Things Considered” and CNN. Robert earned his Bachelor of Science in speech communications from The University of Texas at Austin.

Mark has 20 years of experience working in public relations and corporate communications. Before moving into the private sector, he worked with state and federal agencies such as the Texas General Land Office, National Sea Grant College Program (NOAA), Texas Engineering Experiment Station and Texas A&M University. He is a skilled writer who has developed everything from media releases to speeches to in-depth magazine articles—and even taught copy writing and editing for three years at Texas A&M University. Mark understands how social media and technology have changed the way people interact with each other and with the businesses and organizations that serve them. Mark holds bachelor’s degrees in biology and journalism and a master’s degree in science/medical writing from Texas A&M University.

An Emmy award-winning journalist, Jeff has more than 16 years of experience in broadcast news and public relations. In this capacity, Jeff was responsible for coordinating CNN’s coverage with its 11 domestic news bureaus and 900+ local television affiliates. It was in this role that Jeff and his team won the Emmy for the network’s 9/11 coverage.

As a public relations practitioner, Jeff has leveraged his national media contacts and yielded unparalleled results for clients such as Johnson & Johnson, Lowe’s, RadioShack, British Airways and the CDC’s Office on Smoking & Health. In the Lone Star State, he has developed and executed dozens of public relations and marketing campaigns for the Texas Department of Transportation, Texas Department of Public Safety, the Texas Health and Human Services Commission and the Texas Workforce Commission.
